The origins of “Simple Special Moment” can best be described as one of those inexplicable eureka moments that spark artistic creativity as the song literally developed as a scribble on a cocktail napkin.  Coleman reflects on the song's beginnings, "While having a couple of drinks, the line in the chorus that goes, “the smell of bacon filled my nose” came to me and I thought that painted such a vivid visual that I wrote it down because as you know when bacon is cooking it just fills the whole house with this great smell"

Coleman would save the napkin and several months down the road, a conversation with a colleague in Nashville and an unrelated songwriting pitch opportunity for a contestant on The Voice TV show, inspired him to develop an entire song around that initial idea scribbled on the napkin...and voila, "Simple Special Moment came to fruition (Read the complete unabridged story behind the song further below).

I had scrambled eggs, grits, and toast

The smell of bacon filled my nose

You confessed you had a tattoo

I spilled coffee in my lap

Said a four-letter word made you laugh

And we shared a simple special moment

Chorus from "Simple Special Moment": See Your Shadow

The song's sonics are extremely engaging, led by a warm-toned group of upbeat, fast-paced guitar phrases layered on top of an equally dashing drum section that sets the stage for a tremendously appealing track musically. The mystique that the overall soundscape sets is what draws you into the song and the appeal is further accentuated by the genuine and unpretentious lyrics. The ultimate message and concept behind the song is brilliantly conveyed in the high-spirited lyrics and accompanying vocal performance which is reflective and effervescent.

Coleman explains, "We encounter so many people, strangers, that add that moment of joy to our lives and give us a memory that we never forget, or a story that we tell over and over because it just makes us feel good and that person creates such a lasting impression without even knowing it.  That human element, that human experience is at the heart of the piece, and it really is at the heart of the work of See Your Shadow."

The complete story of how "Simple Special Moment" come about?

“Simple Special Moment” started as a scribble on a cocktail napkin.  While having a couple of drinks, the line in the chorus that goes, “the smell of bacon filled my nose” came to me and I thought that painted such a vivid visual that I wrote it down because as you know when bacon is cooking it just fills the whole house with this great smell.  I saved the napkin held onto it for quite a long time.  I was down in Nashville on business, and I was having a conversation with a colleague, and he was talking about what is known as a snapshot chorus and I thought to myself, I should write a piece with a snapshot chorus.  Snapshot choruses are used in songs that progress forward in time and the chorus refers back to that initial moment in time, it is like a memory the protagonist has.  An opportunity came up for me to write and pitch to a finalist for the television show The Voice and I revisited the idea of writing a piece with a snapshot chorus and I ran across that cocktail napkin that had that line scribbled on it and I constructed the story around that line.  What is great about the piece is theme of the song which is wrapped up in the bridge.  We encounter so many people, strangers, that add that moment of joy to our lives and give us a memory that we never forget, or a story that we tell over and over because it just makes us feel good and that person creates such a lasting impression without even knowing it.  That human element, that human experience is at the heart of the piece, and it really is at the heart of the work of See Your Shadow.
